I sell real estate all over Tampa Bay, but I go out of my way to list and show homes in Safety Harbor. Not just because it is one of the most charming small towns on the Gulf Coast — although it absolutely is — but because every time I am there, I get to eat at Southern Fresh. And once you have had their fried chicken, you will understand why I structure entire showing days around a 4 PM reservation.
What Makes Southern Fresh Special?
Southern Fresh sits at 122 3rd Avenue North in downtown Safety Harbor, just one block off Main Street. It is a small, unassuming spot — the kind of place you might walk past if you did not know any better. Inside, it feels like eating at your grandmother's house if your grandmother happened to be a professionally trained Southern cook. The staff knows the regulars by name, the sweet tea comes in mason jars, and the food is made from scratch every single day.
Their pan-fried chicken is the star. This is not fast-food breaded chicken. It is seasoned, dredged, and pan-fried to order — crispy skin, juicy inside, seasoned perfectly. Pair it with their collard greens (slow-cooked, tender, with just the right amount of vinegar bite) and mac and cheese (creamy, homemade, the real deal), and you have a $20 meal that puts most $50 dinners to shame.
Why I Love Working Safety Harbor Real Estate
Safety Harbor is one of my favorite communities to service as a REALTOR. It is a tight-knit, walkable town with a downtown strip full of local restaurants, boutique shops, and the famous Safety Harbor Resort and Spa sitting right on Tampa Bay. The real estate market in Safety Harbor draws buyers who want character — historic bungalows, tree-lined streets, and a community that actually feels like a community.
When I have showings in Safety Harbor, I make it a point to block out time for Southern Fresh. My clients know this about me. Some of them have become regulars themselves after I brought them here during a house hunt. There is something about sharing a great meal in the town you are about to call home that makes the whole experience feel right.
What to Order at Southern Fresh
Here is what I recommend if it is your first time:
- Pan Fried Chicken Platter — the signature dish. Get two sides. You will not regret the collard greens and mac and cheese combination.
- Smoked Wings — dry-rubbed and smoked, not fried. A completely different experience and just as good.
- Blackened Redfish — when they have it, get it. Fresh Gulf catch, perfectly seasoned.
- Banana Pudding — homemade. If you skip dessert, you are making a mistake.
- Sweet Tea — proper Southern sweet tea. None of that barely-sweetened stuff.
They also do family-style fried chicken for four if you are bringing the crew. Great for a post-closing celebration.
