Primary Routes Out of Clearwater FL
SR-60 / Courtney Campbell Causeway (to Tampa)
SR-60 (Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard) runs east-west through central Clearwater and crosses Tampa Bay via the Courtney Campbell Causeway. This is the primary route for Clearwater residents commuting to Tampa, Westshore, or Tampa International Airport. The causeway is a non-toll bridge with two lanes each direction. It narrows at the bay crossing and backs up during rush hour, particularly eastbound in the morning (7-9 am) and westbound in the evening (4-7 pm).
US-19 (North-South Pinellas Corridor)
US-19 runs north-south through Clearwater, connecting the city to Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs to the north, and Largo and St. Petersburg to the south. It is a high-traffic, high-signal arterial with significant congestion through central Clearwater. FDOT has grade-separated US-19 in some segments to reduce signal stops. Plan for 30 to 50 minutes to reach central St. Petersburg via US-19 south to I-275.
SR-580 (to Oldsmar and I-275)
SR-580 is the main route for Countryside and East Lake residents heading east toward Tampa. It connects to SR-55 (McMullen-Booth Road) and eventually to I-275 near Tampa's Westshore Business District. This route avoids the Courtney Campbell congestion point for north Clearwater commuters.

Clearwater Beach is accessed exclusively via the Memorial Causeway from downtown Clearwater. During tourist season (November through April) and summer weekends, traffic on the causeway and Beach Drive backs up significantly. If you live on Clearwater Beach and commute to Tampa or St. Pete on weekdays during peak season, add 10 to 20 extra minutes versus off-season times.
Clearwater Beach does not have a direct road connection to the Howard Frankland Bridge or Gandy Bridge. Every route from Clearwater Beach to Tampa crosses mainland Clearwater first, then proceeds east via SR-60 or SR-580.
PSTA Bus Service in Clearwater
Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (psta.net) operates bus routes throughout Clearwater and Pinellas County. Key routes for Clearwater commuters include:
| Route | Corridor | Frequency | Practical for Commuting? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 52 | Clearwater Beach to downtown St. Pete via US-19 | Every 30-60 min | Possible but slow (60-90 min) |
| Route 60 | Clearwater to St. Pete along SR-60 | Every 30-60 min | Limited use for Tampa commuters |
| Route 19 | US-19 corridor, Clearwater to St. Pete | Every 30 min | Useful for south Clearwater |
| SunRunner BRT | St. Pete Beach to downtown St. Pete | Every 10-15 min | Not directly applicable to CW |
According to PSTA, most Pinellas County commuters drive. Bus routes exist but are not practical for most suburban-to-suburban commutes. The lack of a cross-bay bus service to Tampa means driving is the default for Tampa-bound workers. Visit psta.net for current schedules and trip planning.
Bicycle Commuting and the Pinellas Trail
The Pinellas Trail is a 70-mile paved multi-use trail running north-south through Pinellas County. It passes through Clearwater, connecting to Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs to the north and Largo and St. Petersburg to the south. For residents who work in Clearwater or in the immediate trail corridor, bicycle commuting is a realistic option.
Cross-bay bicycle commuting to Tampa is not practical. The Courtney Campbell Causeway has a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian path, but the trip to Tampa is 18+ miles from central Clearwater. It is used for recreation, not daily commuting.
Airport Access from Clearwater FL
Tampa International Airport (TPA)
TPA is the primary international airport for the region. From central Clearwater it is approximately 18-28 miles via SR-60 east to the Veterans Expressway or directly on SR-60 past the Courtney Campbell to the TPA exit. Drive time is typically 25 to 40 minutes. Plan for 50+ minutes during peak traffic or when driving from Clearwater Beach.
St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE)
PIE is a smaller airport serving Allegiant, Sun Country, and a handful of other carriers with seasonal service. It is 10 to 20 minutes south of Clearwater via US-19. If your travel patterns match PIE's routes, it is a convenient alternative to TPA with free parking and shorter security lines.
Hybrid Work and Remote Work in Clearwater
Clearwater is well-positioned for hybrid workers who commute 2-3 days per week. The drive to Tampa or St. Petersburg is manageable when you can choose off-peak departure times. Several coworking spaces operate in and near downtown Clearwater, including options in the Clearwater Beach tourism corridor.
If you work fully remote, Clearwater's lifestyle advantages, beach access, and relatively lower cost compared to Naples or Sarasota make it compelling. The combination of Gulf Coast lifestyle and Gulf-to-bay geography is a draw for remote workers relocating from higher-cost metros.
